“It has been a pleasure working with Rud on a number of projects. His enthusiasm and creativity result in some really clever designs that meet our bespoke requirements. Rud is also very committed to the ethos of Chapter 1 which includes involving clients in the design and construction of the buildings they will be using and he contributes so positively to the project team process. We are very pleased to be associated with RSA and look forward to working with Rud on an on-going basis”.
Rachel Sanders, Operations Director – Chapter One Housing Association

"Having enjoyed the service of RSA, Rud demonstrates a holistic approach to design, listening and translating a brief and addressing the constraints within stringent deadlines. His artistic style of sketching, provides a dynamic and progressive design development, a rare but invaluable attribute to any project. Rud is a joy to work with, highly recommended."                                                                                                                        .                                                                                                       Nathan Howells, Wilmott Dixon, Contractor

“Over the last four years, Cyril Sweett has worked with Rud Sawers architects (RSA) on a variety of commissions both during the pre and post contract stages. Specific projects include: BBC office scheme (£6M) in Plymouth, and early development of the Rooute entre (£2M) in Torquay. We are also working together on Dame Hannah Rogers Accommodation requirements at their Seale Hayne Campus , with a project value of circa £800,000. Rud’s architectural flair, attention to detail and outgoing personality instils a great degree of confidence in the project team. RSA proactively agree and adhere to project programmes and embrace the client’s sustainability objectives from inception to completion. We very much look forward to continuing our good working relationship on future commissions”.

Shekinah Mission is a South Devon based charity which works with a broad range of socially excluded adults. This may include working with people who are homeless, have issues around substance or alcohol misuse or may be in the criminal justice system. Within our work we offer accommodation based services such as hostels as well as enterprise projects offering vocational training and employment.

“I first met Rud two years ago when he was working on the new ‘super hostel’ on Plymouth which is due to open later this year. Once of the key ingredients on this project was to ensure that the design team understood and included homeless people’s views on the proposal. I observed Rud at several consultation events where he was working with homeless people to hear their views, not in a tokenistic way but in a way that gave them real ownership and buy-in. He appears to have a natural way of engaging with people regardless of their circumstance and always gave a genuine impression of trying to understand the needs and concerns of others.

Since then we have employed Rud Sawers Architects as the project architect on the construction of the Rooute Centre in Torbay. The Rooute Centre is a self-build enterprise centre in the heart of Torbay which is due to commence early this year. The projects were a particularly challenging project not only due to its self-build nature, but also due to its location which is in the middle of a residential area.

Rud has excelled himself on this project not only from a design perspective but also from a community consultation viewpoint. He has held regular consultation events with the public, which initially was very challenging turned out to be hugely positive.

Rud always answered public concerns in a very honest and considerate way and was clearly one a the key contributors in getting the project through the planning process.
If you are looking for a mainstream normal architect, Rud is clearly not your person. If however you want an enthusiastic architect who cares passionately about his work and the impact of his work Rud is clearly someone you should seriously consider”.
John Hamblin, Chief Executive – Shekinah Mission, Plymouth

Rud Sawers Architects, as part of our companys supply chain, has competitievley and creatively provided architectural services for a number of works projects at the Britanni Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon (BRNC). In all cases, he has effectively interpreted the client’s requirements translating them into cost effective and creative solutions. His designs have always been sound and have rarely attracted requests for further information by the delivering contractor.

The working relationship between both parties is therefore very positive, with Rud Sawers professional and personal qualities, which include his timeliness, flexibility and co-operative nature being the major factors in this. His practice continues to be considered for future design work at BRNC”.
Richard Gaze, VT Flagship Project Manager - BRNC, Dartmouth

Rud Sawers was employed by us as an architect to ensure the smooth passage of a detailed planning application to the Dartmoor National Park. The permission was for a 1,600 square feet extension and other extensive structural building works to our cross passage farm house on Dartmoor.

The brief was to restore the unlisted, but, building of architectural interest by using natural local materials, and to interpret our ideas accordingly. As he said on our first meeting, ‘be the pen in your hand’. However, Rud was forthcoming with practical solutions and aesthetics which we embraced in our scheme. The Design and Access Statement he produced made comprehensive reference to sustainable design features and use of renewable energy which encouraged the planners to look favourably on our application. Furthermore, Rud was sensitive to the historical integrity of our design and after research incorporated features we wished to use, which also impressed the Historical Buildings Officer.

He communicated with the builder and other members of our design team very happily. Without appeal, the detailed planning application was passed successfully with conditions imposed which were not unexpected. He has a very amenable disposition and a good relationship with the Authority”.

“As a client of Rud Sawers I found him to be reliable, flexible and highly creative. He brought interesting and thoughtful solutions to the project. He understood our brief for a sustainable domestic refurbishment and extension and interpreted it in a way which was conducive to its environment; he also addressed sustainability issues in an inventive, workable and enthusiastic manner. I had a very positive working relationship with Rud Sawers during the whole project and I would highly recommend him”.
